Miniature dogs are extremely popular pets because these micro dogs look like forever puppies. No wonder they can fetch thousands of euros each. In general, teacups are significantly smaller than the breed standard and are not recognized by the American Kennel Club. The ethics of these dogs are questionable because in most cases they are the weakest of their kennel and are therefore usually bred with other smaller or weaker dogs.

Miniature dogs are a questionable commodity. Unscrupulous breeders know that they can make good money with these dogs. Unethical breeders may mate runts or closely related animals or deliberately stunt a puppy’s growth by starving it. Find a reputable breeder and a good veterinarian if you are thinking of getting a teacup dog.
Characteristics of the breed
As the smallest dogs in their litter, miniature dogs often have health problems. Some were rejected by their mothers and for some reason did not receive as much nourishment in the womb and after birth. At full size, some can weigh 0.9 to 2.2 kg. At such a small size, these dogs can have several health problems, including bone and immune system problems. These dogs are fragile and can easily die after a fall or are difficult to see and easily crushed or stepped on. Additionally, for some breeds, life expectancy is significantly shorter: some live only about half the lifespan of those of the same breed, but larger in size.
Children need supervision around teacup breeds, which are prone to fractures. These small dogs also need protection from predators such as owls and other birds of prey. These breeds can also have problems house training because they have very small bladders and intestines. They will need many small meals a day to prevent low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and frequent bathroom breaks.

Pomeranian
Although today’s Pomeranians have a reputation as lap dogs, they were originally bred to herd livestock and pull sleds. Previous versions of the Pomeranian breed weighed around 13.5 kilograms. In the 1800s they were bred to be smaller and to be kept as companion dogs rather than working dogs. Since then, they’ve only gotten smaller.

Breeds to avoid
Most responsible veterinarians and breeders will tell you to avoid miniature breeds altogether. It’s wonderful if a teacup chick is lucky enough to reach adolescence, but that doesn’t mean the animal is now out of danger.
Several teacup breeds such as the Yorkie, Pug, and Pomeranian have significantly shorter lifespans than their larger counterparts. If you want a smaller dog, look at toy breeds and adopt a dog at the lower end of the acceptable height and weight ranges. The risk of heartbreak due to a puppy’s premature death is greatly reduced by avoiding miniature breeds.
