History of the Malinois breed

The Malinois originates from Belgium and is one of the four Belgian Shepherd breeds. The other three varieties are Tervuren, Groenendael and Laekenois. These Belgian Shepherds were developed in Belgium in the late 1800s and are registered in Belgium and France under the name Chien de Berger Beige. The Malinois takes its name from the city of Mechelen, where it was developed by breeders.

The Belgian Malinois first arrived in the United States around 1911 and gained popularity. Some were used as military working dogs during World War I. The breed became less widespread during the Great Depression, but enthusiasm for the breed returned in the late 1950s and early 1960s, being recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1959.

In the early 21st century, Belgian Malinois dogs were commonly seen in police, military working dogs, drug detection dogs, and search and rescue dogs. Belgian Malinois are employed by the Secret Service to patrol the White House grounds.

Belgian Malinois are part of Navy SEAL teams and have been used in operations, including those that led to the death of Osama bin Laden in 2011. These dogs wear body armor and can use night vision goggles. They can participate in parachuting for military operations.

Malinois dog care

The Belgian Malinois has a short, straight, weatherproof coat with a dense undercoat. In general, little more than simple brushing is needed. Malinois are known to have a relatively high shedding rate (especially seasonal) and therefore require regular brushing.

Dogs of this breed often file their nails during activities on hard surfaces (walking on pavement), but regularly check their nails to make sure they don’t need trimming. Pay attention to your dog’s dental hygiene and brush his teeth at least two or three times a week.

The Belgian Malinois is a very energetic dog that can become restless or anxious if not properly trained and handled. It is absolutely essential that all Malinois are properly trained. These dogs will ideally be trained to perform a duty and will take pride in doing so.

Additionally, a lot of vigorous exercise is required for this breed, much more than for any other common dog. In addition to brisk walks, try giving your dog some off-leash run time in the fenced yard. Also keep in mind that their herding instincts may mean a tendency to follow cars or bicycles.

This breed is an excellent candidate for dog sports or any activity that requires concentration and endurance. You should be aware that Malinois can become stressed, anxious, or develop behavioral problems if they do not receive adequate training and exercise.

The Belgian Malinois is definitely not the right breed for everyone. They are not suitable for living in an apartment, as it is good to have a fenced yard or space to run. If you have a very active lifestyle, have a lot of time to spend with your dog, and want an energetic dog with an intense personality, then this could be the dog for you. Malinois require proper training and socialization.

Malinois may or may not be suitable for families with children. Be careful because this breed can be super energetic and even hyperactive. Be sure to train your dog to tolerate children. It is also very important to teach your children to behave properly around dogs.

Regardless of breed, never leave a dog alone with small children. This breed has a high herding instinct and the dog may try to grab children by biting their heels.

This breed is known to be aggressive towards other dogs and cats, so you will need to socialize your dog well from an early age if you have a multi-pet household. It may not be wise to bring a Malinois into the family at a later date. Your pet may also misbehave at a dog park in the company of other dogs.

Common health problems

Responsible breeders are committed to maintaining the highest breed standards set by kennel clubs such as the AKC. Dogs bred to these standards are less likely to inherit health problems. However, some breed-specific hereditary health problems may occur. Below are some diseases you should be aware of:

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Elbow dysplasia
  • Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)

Diet and nutrition

Feed your Belgian Malinois two meals a day, between 1 and 1.5 cups of dry dog food. The amount required will vary depending on the size, age and activity level of the animal. Your dog’s needs will change throughout his life and you should discuss this with your vet for specific advice. Make sure you always provide fresh, clean water.

Obesity is a concern for all dogs. If you think your dog is overweight, talk to your vet about changing the feeding schedule, amount, type of food and exercise.

  • Strong personalities

Other dog breeds and additional information
