The zebra finch, scientifically known as *Taeniopygia guttata*, is part of the fascinating Estrildid finch family. Within this grouping, two known subspecies exist—the Australian zebra finch and the Timorese zebra finch. However, as the Timorese variety is less commonly marketed, we‘ll focus on the Australian zebra finch (*Taeniopygia guttata castanotis*) for the purpose of this discussion. These charming little birds thrive when provided with adequate room to fly, a nutritious diet, and the companionship of at least one other finch.
Unlike some bird species that can become highly socialized with humans, zebra finches tend to retain their wild characteristics, making them more suited for observation rather than hands-on interaction. That said, if cared for properly in a spacious and natural environment, they can bring endless joy to bird enthusiasts with their lively and spirited nature. To fully enjoy these delightful creatures, it’s crucial to understand their needs and habits. In the following overview, you’ll find all essential insights about the zebra finch to help you care for them effectively and appreciate their unique traits.

The wild form of the mandarin diamond reaches a size of approximately 11 cm and weighs 10 grams. They are therefore rather smaller finches. There is pronounced sexual dimorphism, which means that male birds (roosters) differ significantly from females (hens). Roosters can be identified by the “zebra pattern” on their throat. They also have a narrow black band on the chest, a distinctive red-orange patch on the cheek and a very deep red bill. Females have a more inconspicuous appearance: their plumage is gray-brown, lacking zebra spots and a cheek patch.

The domestic variants are significantly heavier and larger than the wild form (up to 13 cm and up to 40 grams). Breeding has also produced many different color variations: from completely white zebra finches to pastel-colored ones or those with black cheeks.
Original distribution and lifestyle
As the name suggests, the Australian mandarin diamond originally comes from the Australian continent, where it inhabits much of the inland and is not only found in coastal regions. It lives in rather arid areas, but usually near water sources. Zebra finches love to bathe! In their homeland there are long periods of drought without water. That’s why, in an emergency, little survival artists can even spend a few weeks without drinking.
In reality they are faithful to their location, but the search for water and food forces them to move often. The animals meet in huge swarms and set off in search of food. Otherwise they live in flocks of 50 to 100 birds. These swarms are made up of individual colonies. At dawn they meet and form a flock, they spend the day together and at sunset they retreat to their own territory.
Zebra finches are ready to mate all year round. They are cave breeders and therefore prefer closed breeding places. The male chooses the location and, with the female’s consent, begins to build the nest. The female does not participate in the construction of the nest, but shapes the finished structure and arranges the material. One egg is laid in the nest each day until there are four to six. Regular incubation begins from the third egg onwards. Males and females alternate approximately every hour and a half. It takes at least eleven days from the start of reproduction for the first young to hatch. At first they are completely pink, naked and have their eyes closed. At twelve days the juvenile plumage begins to sprout. If well fed, the chicks leave the nest at around 18 days and at this point they almost resemble the adults, still missing only a small part of the size. Flying is not something they are born with, they have to learn it first and often the first attempts fail, even if the little ones receive a lot of support from their parents. Like all finch species, Mandarin finches are very social and should therefore never be kept alone, but always in pairs. They feel more comfortable in groups, as this corresponds more to their natural way of life. Mutual compatibility increases with the number of animals. It should be straight so that each bird can find a partner for itself. Remember that zebra finches are very fond of breeding and are usually successful.
There are various options for breeding zebra finches:
- As with most birds, it is advisable to have your own “bird room” with permanent freedom to fly. This is the best way for animals to satisfy their enormous need to move. A “sleeping cage” should be available as a retreat place and the birds can visit it independently at any time.
- If it is not possible to create a room for the birds, you can also keep them in an aviary. The TVT states that the minimum size for one or three pairs of tangerine diamonds is 120 x 60 x 100 cm (W x D x H). The prerequisite for keeping an aviary is a daily free flight lasting several hours. Since animals are only domesticated to a very limited extent, it may happen that they do not return to the cage on their own and have to be caught, which is associated with great stress. Therefore, keeping them in a bird room is the best option. If free flight is not possible, they need a large aviary with at least 2 square meters of free flight space.
- It is possible to keep them outside all year round if the birds have a frost-free shelter where they can take refuge at any time.
When flying free, care must be taken to remove or protect possible sources of danger. These include, for example, poisonous plants, fans, windows and mirrors, narrow spaces between furniture, electrical cables and much more
For health reasons (gnawing), cage grates must not be galvanized or covered with plastic. Ideally, the bars are horizontal to allow birds to climb. The place must not be exposed to direct sunlight and must be protected from drafts and temperature changes.

- Perches made from natural branches of different diameters, so that the birds always have to grasp them differently. Ideally, these are only attached on one side so that they bounce slightly when landing and protect the joints.
- Containers for feed, water, sand and fresh food
- Furnishings such as ladders, swings, large branches, thick cotton ropes, etc.
Important: Make sure there is still enough free space for the flight.
The optimal temperature for tangerine diamonds is between 18 and 25 degrees with a relative humidity of 60%. Since natural UV light is “filtered” through window glass, finches require a UV lamp with UVA and UVB components for (color) vision and some metabolic processes. When using fluorescent tubes, «flickering» must be avoided by using a ballast, since birds, unlike humans, perceive it and are therefore very irritated. Computers and televisions also cause flickering, which is unpleasant for birds.
Zebra finches are diurnal and require a sufficiently long period of light (10-12 hours). In the evening it is necessary to ensure adequate darkness so that the birds can relax. In dark rooms it is possible to leave a dim light for orientation.

Nutrition
The staple food for zebra finches is a balanced exotic blend. This must be supplemented by the daily administration of fresh food (green parts of plants, fruit, vegetables, fodder plants such as callisia or catnip) and occasionally sprouted food. Unfilled fresh and sprouted food residues must be removed daily to avoid mold growth. To digest grains, birds need constant access to sand, which is best served in a separate bowl. During moulting and breeding it is possible to cover the increase in protein needs with egg food. Sepia-colored shells and limestone ensure a sufficient supply of minerals. Of course, fresh drinking water should always be available.
Health
Zebra finches are hardy little birds that are not very susceptible to disease. Through respectful animal husbandry (healthy nutrition, absence of individual housing, sufficient free flight and activity) you can create the basis for a long and healthy life for your animals. Posture errors, on the other hand, lead to various diseases and problems. Improper nutrition and lack of movement can lead to metabolic disorders and obesity, while inappropriate perches (lack of variation in diameter, sandpaper covering, plastic) can cause painful plantar ulcers. Lack of light and dry air lead to feathering and respiratory problems. Keeping them alone, in particular, has a fatal impact on the health and well-being of zebra finches. They atrophy, develop behavioral problems and can become ill.
Who are tangerine diamonds suitable for?
People who love watching small, agile talkers will have a lot of fun with tangerine diamonds. On the other hand, if you want birds to become domesticated, you will certainly be happier with other species. Zebra finches generally show very little interest in people. While they can usually be “tamed” to the point that panic doesn’t break out when changing food and water, you won’t be able to get much more than that, even with a lot of patience. You should be aware of this before purchasing. Zebra finches are primarily observation animals.
