Many pet owners work all day and are forced to leave their dogs alone at home. It is not uncommon for these owners to return home to find hyperactive or stressed dogs. Dogs often get bored and even depressed when they are left home alone all day. People who suffer from separation anxiety can cause destruction, injure themselves, and disturb neighbors by barking and howling.
One of the most common reasons given in an animal shelter for surrendering the owner is the dog’s destructive behavior. This can often be prevented by giving your dog the exercise and mental stimulation he needs to be happy and healthy. However, when you are busy working long hours, it is difficult to give your dog the time he needs. Then dog daycare can be a lifesaver.
What is dog daycare?
Dog daycare works just like baby daycare. You leave your dog in the morning on your way to work. While you are away, your dog will receive plenty of attention. Your dog’s day will be full of activities based on the schedule established by the daycare regarding your dog’s specific needs and temperament.
Your dog can enjoy playing with other dogs, playing with people, or curling up on a nice bed or sofa, receiving loving attention. Your dog will also have opportunities to spend time indoors and outdoors, including potty breaks. This is much better than waiting all day like some dogs do.

The cost of dog care

The cost of dog daycare can vary and usually depends on the region you live in and the type of facility you go to. You may pay less for a daycare run from a private home than from a fully staffed facility. However, when you pay more for a facility, your dog can have access to more dog toys and play equipment.
Dog daycare at home
Home/private daycare is often less expensive than commercial daycare. They are usually run by one or two people and are limited to caring for a small number of dogs at a time. This can be a good option if your dog is easily overwhelmed by other dogs. In-home daycare offers your dog a home environment and usually more human-to-dog contact. However, they may have less space to run and play.

Commercial kennels
A fully staffed commercial facility offers a lot for social dogs. The number of dogs per day in these places can vary from ten to twenty dogs, all ready to make friends. Some dog daycares have agility equipment and even swimming pools.
In a commercial facility, trained staff keep dogs occupied in indoor and/or outdoor play areas and supervise all dogs to ensure play remains safe. Staff members are generally trained to prevent dog-on-dog aggression and to break up dog fights (yes, they happen sometimes). The dogs are given breaks to cool down, rest and possibly nibble on healthy snacks.
In both private and commercial kennels, all dogs must be healthy to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and parasites. Dog owners are required to provide proof of current vaccinations for their dogs. You will also need to provide current contact information for yourself and your vet in case of an emergency.
The best choice for your dog
Choosing the right daycare is up to you and your dog. Where do you feel most comfortable leaving it? Where do you think your four-legged friend will be most comfortable and happy? Talk to the people who own and operate the daycare to find out what to expect. Take a tour of the facility to see what your dog will be able to do there. Ultimately, follow your instincts. If something seems wrong, move on.

Find a dog sitter in your area
Most private dog grooming providers can be found by searching online. Dog park news is a great way to find someone that everyone else recommends. It can be especially helpful to read online reviews. Also, ask your veterinarian, local pet store, and friends/family who own dogs for recommendations.
Once you think you’ve found the right place, let your dog spend a few hours there. Most facilities require a one-day trial to ensure your pet is eligible for daycare. When you go to pick up your dog you will know if you made the right decision. They will tell you what your dog did that day and whether or not he got along with other dogs. Then you will look at your dog: the goal is to see him happy, but exhausted!
