Dogs and fireworks don’t mix. Many dogs are afraid of fireworks. Noise phobia is a fairly common fear in dogs. This phobia can include thunderstorms and fireworks. Dogs tend to find loud, unpredictable noises and bright lights really scary. Even a seemingly confident dog may tremble at the unfamiliar sound of fireworks. The good news is that there are some things you can do to help your dog get through the festivities.
Desensitize your dog to the sound of fireworks
If you have some time before an expected fireworks display in your neighborhood, you can start teaching your dog to remain calm in response to the sounds. This is called desensitization. A few simple steps can help.
- Find a video or recording of fireworks.
- Play the video or recording at the lowest volume possible a few times throughout the day.
- Pair the sound of fireworks with things your dog likes, such as treats, cuddles, or a favorite toy.
- Slowly start increasing the volume of the recording or video over several days and continue to associate the sound of fireworks with good things for your dog.
- If at any time your dog begins to show signs of fear, reduce the volume to a point where he feels more comfortable.
- Repeat this several times a day until your dog can hear the sound of fireworks at a loud enough volume without getting scared.
But recording fireworks is not the same as reality. However, playing the recording this way can help reduce the fear and anxiety caused by fireworks.

If you don’t have time to prepare for fireworks or if desensitization hasn’t completely eliminated your dog’s fear, there are other ways to help. These things can help dogs who have a mild to moderate fear of fireworks.
Don’t change your behavior. Many people feel obligated to try to calm their pet when they show signs of fear. We pet them more than usual, hug them and talk to them in a low voice. However, instead of alleviating the dog’s fears, it often reinforces the dog’s fearful behaviors. By paying extra attention to a fearful dog, you are actually validating and rewarding the fearful behavior.

Try not to react to the fireworks. If you jump or tense up when you hear fireworks, you can make your dog’s fear worse. Your body language can tell your dog that there is a real reason to be afraid.

Don’t drag him outside or try to force him near the fireworks in an attempt to get him used to the sounds. This can lead to increased fear and a frightened dog can become aggressive if pushed beyond his comfort level.
If you are dealing with a serious fear of a dog
In the case of a severe phobia, you may not be able to do anything on your own to alleviate your dog’s condition. If your dog displays a high level of fear, talk to your vet about options such as medication. Your vet may prescribe an anti-anxiety medication or sedative to keep your dog calm during fireworks.
Medication may be the only answer to getting your dog through fireworks season. However, you can start preparing for the future with a desensitization program. A trainer or behaviorist can also be of great help. In severe cases, you may never be able to completely eradicate the phobia, but you may be able to alleviate some of your dog’s fear.

Leave the dog at home
Whether or not your pet gets scared around fireworks, it’s always best to leave them at home if you’re going to see fireworks. A frightened dog may try to run and seek shelter if forced to participate in a fireworks display. Many animal shelters report a high rate of lost pet incidents during the holidays.
While you are away, your dog should be kept in a safe, escape-proof space (such as his crate or a cozy room). If possible, add some sort of white noise to muffle the sound of the fireworks.
