Summer is a time of joy not only for people, but also for their pets. But when the temperature rises above 25 degrees, the heat can become a serious challenge for animals. Dogs and cats don’t sweat like humans, so it’s much harder for them to regulate their body temperature. Veterinarians point out that even a short stay in too hot air can cause overheating or even fatal heatstroke. Therefore, it is important to know how to help your pet feel safe and comfortable on hot summer days.
Water is the most important helper in hot weather

During heat, the animal must have constant access to clean, fresh water. The water bowl should be filled several times a day, especially if kept outdoors. If your dog or cat is reluctant to drink, you can try reinvigorating the water by adding an ice cube or using a fountain that constantly moves the water and encourages drinking.
Avoid metal utensils as they heat up quickly in the sun. It is best to choose ceramic or plastic bowls and store them in the shade. Some homeowners even leave several bowls of water in different locations throughout the summer, a simple but effective means of preventing dehydration.
Walks – only early in the morning or in the evening
Asphalt and tile can heat up to 60°C at midday, making walking in broad daylight extremely dangerous. Dogs’ paws are sensitive to heat, so they can burn within minutes. It’s best to walk your pet early in the morning or after dark when the ground is cooler.
If you are not sure whether a surface is too hot, touch it with your hand: if you are hot, it is even more difficult for the dog. Even short-haired dogs need protection from UV rays, especially on light-colored noses or ears: veterinarians recommend using a sunscreen specifically designed for pets.
How to freshen a pet at home
Even in the room the animal can be too hot. Leave windows open (only if there is no way to jump out), use a fan or air conditioner. Dogs and cats prefer to lie on cooler surfaces such as tiles or special cooling mats that keep the temperature lower.
You can run a damp towel over the fur or gently spray the pet with water, but avoid a full bath in cold water – a sudden change in temperature can cause stress. It is also helpful to offer dogs «ice treats» – frozen treats that help them cool down well.
Overheating signs that cannot be ignored
Heatstroke can occur within minutes, especially if the pet is in an enclosed, poorly ventilated space. The first signs are increased breathing, abundant salivation, lethargy, impaired coordination. If you notice that your dog or cat has become lethargic, shaking or vomiting, you need to take immediate action.
The animal should be moved to a cool place, given water and wet its paws or belly with warm (not cold!) water. Never put ice directly on the body: this could cause spasms of the blood vessels. If the condition does not improve, contact your vet immediately – heatstroke is an emergency.
Which animals are particularly sensitive to heat?
Short-nosed dogs, such as pugs, bulldogs or Pekingese, have difficulty breathing and overheat more quickly. You should also pay attention to elderly, overweight or sick animals. Even cats, especially long-haired ones, suffer from the heat and are helped by brushing, which removes excess fur and improves air circulation.
Smaller animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs or birds should be kept in a cool place away from the sun. Never leave cages or aquariums in direct sunlight: it is dangerous for life.
A car is a mortal danger
One of the biggest dangers of summer is leaving an animal in the car, even if the window is open. The interior of a car heats up to 50-60°C in a few minutes and a dog can die in just 10 minutes. Veterinarians remind us: even a short stop «just for a few minutes» can be fatal.
If you see an animal locked in a hot car, don’t hesitate to call the police or emergency services – every minute counts.
Peculiarities of feeding and care in heat
Pets often lose their appetite during the summer, this is normal, but it’s important to make sure they still get the nutrients they need. Give smaller but more frequent portions. Do not leave food for a long time: it deteriorates quickly in the heat. It is better to replace wet food with dry food or store it in the refrigerator.
Also take care of the coat properly. Coat that is too dense or matted retains heat, so regular brushing is essential. However, it is not recommended to shave the animal down to the skin – the fur protects from sunburn.
ALL
Can you bathe your dog on a hot day?
You can, but use warm water. Sudden cooling with cold water can cause stress and even spasms of the blood vessels.
How do you know if a pet is overheated?
Frequent breathing, drooling, lethargy or vomiting are the main signs. In this case, immediately look for a cool place and consult a vet.
Does your pet need sun protection?
For short-haired and light-haired dogs and cats – yes. Use a special cream for animals, especially on the nose and ears.
Can a pet rest on the balcony?
Only possible if there is shade, water and a cool surface. Avoid direct sunlight: even behind glass the temperature can become dangerous.
May the summer be pleasant and safe
The heat represents a challenge not only for humans, but also for our four-legged friends. The most important thing is vigilance and prevention. Providing water, shade and coolness is enough to keep your pet safe and comfortable even on the hottest days. Proper summer care is an expression of love and responsibility that ensures a longer, healthier and happier life for your pet.
