How to cure your dog from motion sickness

Many dogs love car rides and have no problems with motion sickness. However, most didn’t start out that way. It is very common for puppies and young dogs to suffer from motion sickness due to movement, stress and excitement. They may be lethargic, whimpering, drooling, crying, and eventually vomiting everywhere. Fortunately, most dogs outgrow this stage and begin to get used to traveling in the car, and in the meantime there are ways to save yourself from such problems.

Before we start

To relieve your puppy’s nausea, it’s best to understand what might be causing it. Keep in mind, however, that it is completely natural in young puppies and even some older dogs.

It’s really no surprise that some puppies don’t like car rides. Every first experience can mean a lot of stress, fear, or excitement. Just like humans, dogs can vomit from these things. Walks are often associated with rude thermometers and needle sticks at the vet. This can cause the puppy to be afraid of anything to do with the car, even if it’s a vacation trip or fun rides around town.

Another reason why children get motion sickness is due to actual motion sickness. The movement causes the fluid in the ear to move, helping the dog orient himself to the world around him. Too much movement can cause dizziness and motion sickness. This can occur in dogs of any age.

The good news is that you can help train dogs to get used to car rides. Until then, you can ease your pup’s discomfort with a little preparation.

Reduces stress

Puppies associate negative feelings with what they predict will happen at the end of the trip. To change your dog’s mindset, turn your car into a palace of puppy toys and treats that your dog can only get close to when inside the car.

Gradually teach your dog that the car offers many advantages. Treats, praise and admiration for dogs can go a long way. Anxiolytic compresses and calming pheromones can be purchased from pet stores and can help reduce feelings of anxiety.

Plan your meals

If the chicken doesn’t have anything to vomit in its stomach, it will be less likely to feel sick. Make sure you feed your dog a few hours before going on a trip. Offer water, though, as it can help calm his tummy.

Pleasure of viewing

Traveling in the car where your puppy can’t see any part of the road can cause tummy discomfort. Very young puppies may not be able to see out the window, but when the dog is older and can look out the window, he has a way of orienting himself in the moving world.

Make sure your puppy is securely restrained in a secure carrier or other backseat restraint. Dogs loose in the car are at risk of injury or death if the airbag deploys. A puppy barrier or crate also keeps your dog off your lap, protects you from becoming a distracted driver, and also limits the amount of mess your pup can make inside the car.

Fresh air

Open the window so your pet can get fresh air. All those fresh smells carried by the wind will distract the dog from any unpleasant mood. A narrow opening allows him to smell without risking eye injury from flying objects.

We also recommend stopping and letting your puppy walk for potty breaks on long car trips. Most dogs love to experience new places with their sense of smell. A break can help your puppy associate the car with fun new things and places to explore.

How to prevent your puppy from getting car sick

If these tips don’t work and your dog hasn’t overcome motion sickness, there are a few remedies you can try.

The same medicine that humans take to combat motion sickness also works in dogs. Dramamine is considered safe for most healthy adult dogs.

Ginger is a natural nausea remedy that you can try giving to your dog. Ginger capsules are easy to find in health food stores and many pharmacies. Chickens under 7 pounds can safely take in 250 milligrams or less of ginger, while chickens over 7 pounds can usually take in up to 500 milligrams of ginger.

Additionally, you can offer pups dog-friendly versions of ginger biscuits. Eating biscuits in the car can be a good positive association even for young dogs.

If you suspect your pet is sick, call your vet immediately. For health-related questions, always consult your veterinarian, as he or she will examine the pet, know the pet’s health history and can make the best recommendations.
