Dog parks can be a lot of fun for dogs. They have the opportunity to run and play off-leash with other dogs. However, if you are not careful, accidents can happen at dog parks. Plus, if you don’t know the basic rules of going to the dog park, you can ruin it for everyone else.
Some dogs don’t belong at the dog park
Dogs that have not been fully vaccinated should not be in a dog park. This includes puppies under 16 weeks of age. They may come into contact with diseases against which they have no immune defenses. Additionally, small puppies can be injured by adult or larger dogs.
Bring only healthy dogs to the dog park. Your dog must be fully vaccinated with heartworm and parasite prevention and with no signs of illness or injury. You don’t want to make other dogs sick. Additionally, your dog’s condition may worsen after running and playing. Contact your veterinarian.
Don’t bring aggressive dogs to dog parks or other places where dogs play off-leash. A dog park is not a suitable place for dogs with a history of aggression towards people or other dogs. Find alternative ways to entertain and exercise your dog. Consider training or behavior modification.

Never bring an unspayed female dog in heat to the dog park. There may be an intact (unneutered) male dog that cannot be vetted. Worse, if there is more than one intact male in the park, they may start a battle for supremacy over the female in heat. Don’t risk it.
In this regard, do not bring an entire male to the dog park where there may be an entire female in heat.
Better yet, spay or neuter your dog!

The dog park is not suitable for small children
Do not bring infants and small children to the dog park. Dogs can easily hit a small child while he is running and playing. Also, remember that you don’t know the other dogs at the park. A child running around can trigger predation by another dog, leading to disaster. It is safer to let an adult accompany children to their playground while the dog plays freely in the designated area.
Parasites are another reason why children don’t need to hang around with unfamiliar dogs. Some parasites are even more harmful to children than to dogs.
Is your dog ready for the dog park?
Before going to the dog park, make sure you have a well-socialized dog. The dog park is not the place for your dog to socialize. Ideal socialization occurs in a controlled environment. Every dog that enters a dog park should already have a good socialization foundation so that everyone knows how to behave around each other. How to behave at the dog park
Most dog parks have rules posted outside the gate. Be sure to read and follow them. This will benefit you, your dog, and others.
Check out the park before entering. Don’t bring your dog if the park seems overcrowded or if there is already aggressive behavior.
If it’s an off-leash dog park, make sure you let your dog off-leash before entering. A dog on a leash may feel vulnerable in the presence of loose dogs and attack in defense. Most dog parks have a double-locked area where you can let your dog off-leash before letting him into the dog park.

If several dogs are waiting at the gate when you enter, wait for them to relieve themselves before letting the dog in. Ask other owners to call their dogs if necessary.
If there is a separate area for small dogs, take your small dog there. Do not bring small dogs into the large dog area, nor large dogs into the small dog area. If there is no separate area, be especially careful. Observe the animals to make sure the ones playing are close enough in size that the smaller ones aren’t at risk.
Always pick up after your dog! No one wants to step in poop. Additionally, some dogs like to eat or roll in other dogs’ waste. Be polite! Bring bags, collect excrement and dispose of it properly.
Avoid bringing toys, especially if your pet has difficulty guarding resources. If so, keep your dog away from dog park toys.
Supervise your dog at all times. You are not at the dog park to socialize with other people or play on your phone. Observe your dog carefully. Make sure you can call your dog from afar if things go wrong (aggressive behavior, excessively rough play, aggression, etc.). It’s time to leave the park if things get out of hand or if your dog gets tired or bored.
It is important to know that if your dog injures another dog, the responsibility is yours! Following the instructions above will reduce the chance of problems, but accidents can happen. Be prepared to take responsibility if something happens.
