Socialize budgies | Preparations: Create ideal conditions for the socialization of budgies

Budgerigars are flock birds: in their original habitats in the Australian wilderness, they live in large groups, sometimes consisting of several hundred individuals. Living in such a flock not only allows birds to satisfy their social needs, but also provides protection and security. These social bonds are crucial to their well-being, which is why it is essential even in the case of pet ownership that budgies are not kept alone, but can share their lives with other pets. Loneliness and isolation can lead to various behavioral and health problems and significantly reduce the quality of life of sensitive animals. Therefore, keeping budgies alone is not permitted under the Animal Welfare Act.

It is certainly better and easier to welcome two or more birds that already know each other and get along well. However, socialization, i.e. the grouping of birds that do not know each other, may sometimes become necessary, for example if a partner animal has died or if a group needs to be expanded. Since parrots are highly social, bringing them together usually works without problems, but it is still advisable to make some preparations and carry out socialization carefully and gradually to avoid stress, fear or unnecessary aggression and to promote a harmonious relationship from the start. In this article you will find out what you need to know and consider when socializing budgies.

Preparations: Create ideal conditions for the socialization of budgies

Composition of the budgie group

As already written, it is usually not a big problem to get budgies used to each other, because sociable birds want one thing above all: not to be alone. However, there are constellations of pairs or groups that are more suitable than others, so it makes sense to think in advance about which new bird might fit in with the established one. This significantly increases the chances of success and harmonious coexistence in the long term. In addition to individual likes and dislikes, which budgies obviously also have and which cannot be calculated in advance, there are some factors you can use as a guide:

Type: As a rule, couples consisting of one rooster and one hen or two roosters are considered very stable, as are groups with an even number of birds and a balanced sex ratio (for example two roosters and two hens). It is important that the number is even so that each animal can find a mate. Raising two chickens can be a source of conflict, although there are obviously exceptions to this rule. In This article we have under the point “What composition of the group?” has summarized the most important things on this topic for you.

Alter: Parrots that are around the same age tend to get along with each other because they have similar activity levels. If a young bird less than a year old is kept together with an older one, it may happen that the older one is a little annoyed by the young one’s excessive energy and it will take a little longer for harmony to prevail.

In general, however, the socialization of individual birds is almost always successful, as highly sociable animals always prefer not to have to be alone. However, the above points should be taken into consideration when choosing the newcomer to offer the foster child the ideal partner by his or her side.

Important: Contrary to persistent rumors, parrots that live alone for a long time can (and certainly should!) be socialized. It is possible that in individual cases they need a little more time, but they also get used to a companion of their own species and then literally blossom!

Budgies are highly social animals who express their affection, for example by preening each other’s feathers.

Adequate living space, hygiene and facilities

Before socializing, check whether the aviary where your birds will live together later is large enough for everyone. According to the Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare and. V. (TVT), 1 – 3 pairs of parrots need accommodation with the Minimum dimensions 150 x 60 x 100 cm (W x D x H), although your feathered friends will obviously be very happy to have more space!

Before your birds move into their new home together, you should clean it carefully if it is not new. Equipment also needs to be cleaned/renewed and rearranged. Additionally, it is important to provide sufficient food and water bowls, places to sit and land at different heights, and activities (e.g. adventure food, toys, natural branches, etc.) to avoid arguments.

Health check

Make sure all budgies are healthy and have no diseases or parasites that could endanger other animals. A visit to the vet is recommended to ensure all birds are in good health. You can also discuss with them whether it is appropriate to observe a quarantine period for safety reasons.

Accustom unfamiliar parrots to each other

Ultimately, “socialization” means nothing more than the careful and gradual acclimation of strange animals to each other. The great need that budgies have to be surrounded by others of their kind is very useful in this case, so that socialization usually works without problems. However, gradual acclimatization is gentler on the birds and increases the prospects of lasting harmony than any sudden action that can frighten sensitive birds.

A gentle method is the two-cage version, in which the birds are initially kept in two separate houses in the same room for a certain period of time (usually a few days) so that they can see and hear each other. This way they can get in touch with each other, get used to each other’s presence and, in the end, even enjoy it. You can initially place the two cages further apart from each other and then move them a little closer each day. During this time, the parrots’ body language and other signals should be carefully monitored. Positive signs and expressions of interest include, for example, standing on the side of the cage facing the other bird, tilting the head when the other bird chirps, warbling calmly and calmly, and showing no signs of tension or stress. Aggressive or panic signals, such as loud screaming, should be heard first. In this case, the distance between the cages should be increased again.

Finally, the parrots can fly freely in a neutral space with each other and, if all goes well, housed together in the freshly cleaned shared aviary. However, they often return there in pairs. If they need a little more distance at first and they both go back to their separate enclosures, that’s totally fine. Let them fly again the next day until they decide the shared aviary is best.

Although most parrots come into contact and bond with each other very quickly, they may also need more time. Be patient with your protégés and adapt to their speed. You will soon be rewarded for your efforts with budgies happily sleeping next to each other and happily chatting with each other!

Conclusion

The need to get two or more unknown budgies used to each other, or to socialize them, may arise from time to time, for example after the loss of a partner animal. Since budgies are highly social animals, they should not be left alone for long, but rather have a new companion at their side as soon as possible to feel safe and secure and to be able to communicate and interact like parrots. Being able to express their social behaviors is fundamental to the well-being and quality of life of budgies. Fortunately, it is usually not a problem to familiarize the birds with each other, first allowing them to get used to each other’s sounds and movements in two separate homes and then finally bringing them together in a neutral space. This method is the gentlest option for budgies because it reduces stress, fear and aggression and adapts to the budgies’ rhythm. Once the first steps are taken, the bond deepens with time spent together, just like with us humans.
