The name «Boston Terrier» reveals a lot about the origins and history of the popular four-legged friend and identifies the city in the north-east of the United States as its place of origin. Its ancestors, however, come from Europe: in the second half of the 19th century, an ambitious English breeder crossed an English Bulldog with an English White Terrier, a now extinct breed. One male of the litter found his new home across the Atlantic in the city of Boston, Massachusetts, USA, specifically with a gentleman named Robert C. Hooper, who gave his mate the name «Hooper’s Judge.» Hoopers Judge is considered the progenitor of all modern Boston Terriers. Through inbreeding and crossing other breeds, including the French Bulldog, the breed has been continuously developed and refined in order to promote certain external and even character characteristics.
