Some countries’ laws may require that your puppy be kept indoors leash and know how to walk when you are off the property. But even if they don’t, it’s simply polite puppy behavior to know leash etiquette.
With proper leash training, your dog has more freedom to safely explore the world beyond your front block or yard.
Large chickens can turn into powerful «tanks» that can rip the leash out of your hands or drag you completely. This can be dangerous for you if you get hit and dangerous for him if he runs into traffic or collides with another dog.
Even friendly pups can get scared, and a leash provides security and a level of comfort when a trusted owner provides guidance through crowds of strangers or scary situations.

Puppies don’t instinctively know how to walk on a leash. When you pull, dogs instinctively pull in the opposite direction, and if you allow puppies to win, this can make it even more difficult to overcome the urge to fight.
It is much easier to train a small puppy than a strong teenager or adult. If you have a puppy, this is the perfect time to teach him to walk well on a leash. Start immediately when you bring the chicken home.
Start with a collar
Many purebred puppies wear temporary collars (or color-coded ribbons) from birth to facilitate identification by littermates. But if the collar is new to your puppy, give him some time to get used to it.
A flat nylon collar with a metal buckle and space so you can fit two fingers underneath is ideal. You will probably have to get larger ones as the chick grows, so the cheap ones work well at first.

Use a harness with a pulling dog
For strong pups who might be tempted to drag you down the street, use an anti-pull harness. These training tools work especially well for older, more stubborn puppies because they train them not to pull.
Light attaches to a clip on the front of the dog’s chest so that when the dog pulls, the harness returns the pet to the person holding the leash. This effectively trains the dog not to pull.

Appeal to your dog’s sense of smell
Before attaching the leash or harness for the first time, encourage your puppy to smell them. Smell is an important means of communication for chicks; a good sniff is important. But the leash is not a toy, so don’t let your dog chew it or play with the leash.
Get the right leash
Choose a leash style appropriate for your puppy’s size. Lightweight nylon leashes work well for small pets, while heavier leather leashes may be better suited for larger pups.
It’s a good idea to put aside your desire to get a retractable leash. These can teach puppies to pull because they reward jumping, but can be useful for toy-sized dogs. A length of approx. 2 meters usually gives puppies enough freedom without owners losing control.
At this point, simply look for your puppy not to lunge, not to pull, but simply walk well on both sides with a loose (not tight) leash. If you keep the leash taut, the dog will naturally pull in the opposite direction, so try to avoid this movement. Reward good behavior
Keep treats, favorite toys or other treats on hand (anything with a strong odor will drive puppies crazy) and greet them with your free hand. You may also want to use clicker training to communicate with your puppy.
Show your puppy a treat while your dog sits or stands next to you. If you plan to compete in obedience trials or other dog sports, it is traditional for the animal to walk on its left side. But if you don’t care about competition, it doesn’t matter which side you’re on, as long as you’re consistent.
Wait until the puppy focuses on the reward. So say «Let’s go!» or another verbal cue that you use constantly. You need to know how to talk to a puppy in a way that he understands. Hold the treat right in front of his nose when you start walking, encouraging your dog to follow.

Practice walking
Once your puppy understands the concept of walking off-leash and sitting on command, you may want to change the speed. You’ll want your pet to keep up with you and stay close to you, whether you’re walking, trotting, or running. Also, practice changing direction.
When your puppy walks to the left, it should be fairly easy to follow a curve or turn right. Turning left might require enticing with the reward at least initially. Make it a game so that once your puppy gets the hang of it, you can praise him profusely.
Verification problems and behaviors
“Rehearsing” a behavior means making sure your pet maintains the behavior even in difficult situations. To demonstrate your dog’s ability to walk well on a leash, move training sessions to areas that provide more entertainment.
After all, it will be necessary to leave the yard or living room when you go to the park or take a trip to visit friends and relatives, and you want the trip to come home. Light free to be default behavior wherever you go.
For example, you should practice in front of the house during rush hour in the morning or when your spouse throws a ball across the room.

The jumping problem
Your puppy shouldn’t jump to grab the food or toy, so you should lower your hand position if he starts jumping. You can also use a long wooden spoon with a sticky treat or a commercial «stick» designed for this purpose so you don’t have to bend over. After a few steps, stop and tell the puppy to «sit». Reward the chicken with the treat.
Hurry or pull on the leash
Repeat the walking exercise with Light luring the puppy with a treat. Stop every few steps, place the puppy in a sitting or lying position and reward him. The puppy should quickly learn that «go» (or other consistent commands) means walk next to you, and you will pay with a reward when the dog stays while you stop.
Correct behavior only when a reward is given
Once the puppy has completed several exercises, he will no longer need to be enticed, but he will want to know that you have rewards on hand. Increase the puppy’s attention by possibly offering the reward intermittently – instead of every time, reward at irregular intervals of a few seconds between each other. This teaches your dog to always obey because it is unclear when a reward will arrive.
